Things to Remember Before Traveling to Europe
1. Apply for Your Schengen Visa Early: A Schengen visa is mandatory for Indian travelers. Processing can take 2–3 months, especially during peak tourist seasons. Starting early ensures you won’t miss out on your preferred travel dates.
2. Currency & Payment Options: France, Austria, and Liechtenstein use Euros, while Switzerland uses Swiss Francs. Carry some cash for small expenses and a travel card for larger purchases. Inform your bank to avoid card blocks abroad.
3. Respect Local Customs & Rules: Quiet hours are strictly observed in Switzerland and Austria. Avoid loud behavior in hotels or residential areas. Know that carrying large amounts of undeclared cash or restricted items can lead to fines.
4. Pack for Europe’s Weather: Winters in Switzerland and Austria are cold and snowy, so thermal wear, jackets, gloves, and boots are essential. Summers in France are warm, so lightweight clothing works best. Layering is always practical.
5. Understand Public Transport: Europe’s trains, trams, and metros are punctual and convenient. Always validate tickets where required. Cities like Vienna and Zurich have strict fines for fare evasion.
6. Mind Cultural Etiquette: Small gestures go a long way—stand in queues and speak softly in public areas. Learning a few phrases, like ‘Bonjour’ in France or ‘Grüß Gott’ in Austria, shows respect and friendliness.
